2005 Ottawa Water Polo League

Club AquaPolo, from Hull wins the 2^nd Annual Ottawa Water Polo League.

In a game that was only close to the end of the second quarter, the young team from Hull demolished the much-improved Ottawa University team 16:8 to capture their first OWPL title. Lead by their youngest player, Cadet, Youth and Junior National player, Dusko Dakic the AquaPolo Club only lost control of the game for a brief period of time at the beginning of the second quarter. But in the end, their aggressive press defence did what it was supposed to do and shut down Ottawa U’s shooters. As a result hard-shooter David Bertrand only scored 1 goal. Ottawa U’s most successful player was the season’s second highest goal scorer, originally from the Montreal club of DDO, Scott Caswell. Caswell scored 5 goals in the Gold Medal game to give him a total of 58 goals.

            In the Bronze Medal game the Titan’s Youth team confidently exposed of the Senior Men’s team who were showing signs of fatigue after the morning’s Cross over game. 16-year-old Stefan Pavicevic, this year the highest scorer with 62 goals (almost doubling last year’s record of 32), a member of Canada’s Youth National team, caused most of the damage with 5 goals. Youth Pan-Am silver medallist and tournament MVG, Mark Tanguay, was solid in nets and seemed to get great satisfaction out of shutting down the Senior team’s veterans, which included former Junior and senior National team players.

            In the semi-final games Ottawa U. beat the Senior Team 13:9 and Hull beat their all-time rival neighbour, the Ottawa Titans.

The Second edition of the OWPL was a great success. The five-team league will expand to 6-7 next time around. The 3^rd edition of the League will start in October of this year.
