Report form First week OWPL league
Great first week in the 3rd Annual Ottawa Water Polo League.

In the first game the young Titan's-2 team beat the GG's. Coach Blake Christie's team was clearly in better shape at this point in the season but the GG's bounced back with a much-improved performance against Hull-1. Scott Caswell, last year's 2nd highest goal scorer, scored 14 (!) goals in his first 2 games.

The Raven's pulled off a great victory over the Senior Men's team, which included players Jamie Earle, Bill Meyer, Nick Fox and Brennan Cartier and after 4 years of absence marked the come-back of coach Bela Szeri .

Raven player (and Titan coach) Blake Christie put his coaching board aside for an hour to show the others how it's done and scored 5 goals in an unusually physical game.

In the last game of Round 1 the Titan's-1 team clearly beat the Hull-2 team, which came as a surprise for many. Hull-2 is an amalgam of Hull Senior veterans and some Youth National team athletes but with a good team effort (and 8 goals by Youth National team player Stefan Pavicevic) the young Titans were able to hold the Hull team to 9 goals, while they put
away 16.

Round 2 looks every bit as exciting as the first round. The Ravens play Titans-2; GG's vs Titan's 1; Ravens against Hull-2 and the Seniors play Hull-1.

For more information on results and goal scorers please check www.titanswaterpolo.ca under OWPL.

Andras Szeri
OWPL Coordinator

Trillium Success

In the summer of 2002, the Ottawa Titans Water Polo Association received a three-year, $153,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant. This contribution facilitated incredible growth and change within our club. Titans Water Polo is now viewed as one of the premier water polo clubs in Canada.

Hours and hours of volunteer effort along with the support from the Trillium Foundation allowed us to overcome start-up challenges and growing pains to build quality programs. The Titans’ leadership team is thrilled to report that we have met or exceeded all of the objectives set out in the grant application. Achievements include:

    * The innovative 'I Love Water Polo' recreational program
    * Popular summer camps
    * Unique programs to recruit and retain girls
    * Flourishing development of coaches, referees and volunteers
    * Upgrades and improvements in club efficiency

Approximately one-third of the Trillium grant ($53,673) was used for the purchase of new water polo equipment. Another $19,818 went toward updated computer equipment, software, fax/photocopier, marketing costs and office supplies. The remaining money was dedicated to salary and program costs for clinics, camps and training courses to build our club, our leadership and our athletes.

Over the last 3 years Titans Water Polo has:

    * Grown on average more than 40% per year, with approximately 45% of athletes being girls
    * Offered 125 free introductory water polo clinics for a total of 1,810 girls and boys ages 8-12
    * Held 15 leadership training courses (coaching, refereeing, minor officials) for 196 participants
    * Hosted 141 specialty clinics for current members (shooting, goalie, enhanced training, all-girls, etc). These were attended by 2,707 participants, with approximately 20% of them from 'I Love Water Polo'.
    * Organized 7 specialty camps (summer, holiday, March break) for 417 participants, with approximately 33% of participants from 'I Love Water Polo’
    * Received an Award of Excellence from Parks and Recreation Ontario for the 'I Love Water Polo' program

Titans Water Polo wishes to thank our coaches, referees and volunteers for their outstanding effort, initiative and leadership to make these changes and programs a reality. We are grateful to Ontario Trillium Foundation for its financial support.

Nancy Snihur
Trillium Grant Coordinator

Congratulations to Patrick Bickerton, winner of the 2005 Spirit of the Capital Young Athlete award from Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa. Patrick is a Titans Youth athlete and an ILWP coach. Along with the award, Patrick receives a $1000 bursary.

Thank you Ottawa Titans for nominating Patrick for this award!

What an extraordinary evening we had at the Awards Ceremony on June 2 at the Congress Centre. Over 250 guests attended.  The ceremony was beautifully orchestrated, star-studded and extremely moving. It was certainly an honour to be there with our son.

The Young Athlete category was sponsored by the Ottawa Senators. Patrick was introduced by Dave Ready of the Senators foundation. Patrick felt extremely honored to be even nominated, so when they announced his name he could hardly believe it. In accepting the award, Patrick thanked the Ottawa Titans for their nomination and support. The runner up-in this category was Samantha Morris from St Pius X Catholic High School.

Other award categories were Personal Courage, Global Citizenship, Philanthropy, Arts and Literature, Academic Perseverance and Entrepreneurship. All the nominees are outstanding young individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary strengths and accomplishments, and some have overcome tremendous obstacles.

It was a wonderful event, and we came home feeling extremely proud of Patrick and of all the finalists and nominees for their tremendous accomplishments, and their spirit in making a difference in our community.

Jobs range from helping at the merchandise table to selling 50/50 tickets to being a minor official.
For those new to the world of minor officials (or for those who would like a refresher), we have training available Sunday January 16 and 23,
7:30-9pm, at Nepean Sportsplex. Don't be intimidated if you have not done it before- we'll ensure you have the training to do the job. To sign up for volunteering for the Titans Cup, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Adrian Steenkamer at atsteenkamer@rogers.com.
During the Titans Cup, we host a Hospitality Room for officials, coaches and volunteers, where we provide a hot lunch, snacks, fruit, drinks and 'quiet zone' for the duration of the Tournament. All items are donated. If you are able to make a contribution to the Hospitality Room, please contact Hospitality Room Coordinator Susan Bouwer, at
bouwerbunch@sympatico.ca.
We will once again be producing a Souvenir Program and will be selling advertisements to help offset our tournament costs. If you would like to place an ad (ranging from $25-$100) in the Souvenir Program, please contact Bob Tibbo at
bob.tibbo@rogers.com.
If you have any other questions about Titans Cup, please contact Deanna Barry at
INFO@titanswaterpolo.ca or 741-1224.
