Titans Piranhas and Stingrays Compete at 18U Ontario Provincials, March 28-30, 2008
Submitted by Kasia Hart

The Titans Piranhas team was triumphant at the Women's U18 Provincials winning the Gold medal, with a very strong showing from our U16 women's team "playing up" and demonstrating their strength and character. The Stingrays were the only cadet team to enter this Youth Provincials – and from this invaluable experience will be a force to be reckoned with at their upcoming Cadet Provincial weekend.

The Piranhas and Stingrays built on their performances each game. A well known recipe of their success lies outside the pool. Only those who have witnessed their unique pre-game warm up will agree, it is a combination of dancing, party-frenzy, dramatization, charades, and a little twist of ring-around-the-rosie! Although the Piranhas faced a sudden death overtime situation in the round robin competition against KW –veteran player Lisa Sharp scored the critical goal to win the game. That evening with their fast counter and solid goaltending, a shut-out win over Hamilton thrust the Piranhas into ranking 1st over all. KW fought the Piranhas hard in the gold medal game, but the girls played as a unit, moved as one and with some key saves proved their strong hole set was not a factor.  Named to the tournament All-Star Team were: Stephanie Le Saux Farmer, Evie Marshall, Rebekka Steenkamer and Maria Lapins.

The Stingrays loaned several players to the Piranhas for this event, and with the help of some Marlins, still managed a respectable fifth place finish. Their games were rough but fought with pride and determination – Congratulations to our coaches and athletes!

Be sure to check out the end of this newsletter for some more great shots of the girls!

Freedom's Fury" is a powerful feature documentary about the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the "Bloodiest Game in Olympic History." In this hard-hitting film, the story is finally told about the fateful fall in 1956 when Hungary exploded in a people power revolt and climaxes with the infamous waterpolo showdown between Hungary and the Soviet Union at the Melbourne Olympics. Now known as the "Blood in the Water Match," the documentary follows the story of the young star of the Hungarian Olympic waterpolo team, Ervin Zador, who finds himself the unwitting focal point of one of the most politicized sports matches ever played.
