2008 Summer
Olympics Coverage
The 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremonies can be seen by Canadians this Friday
morning, from 7am onwards on CBC television (Cable
8). Check out CBC
Canada's Olympics website! Here is a link
to the water polo portion:
http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/water-polo/.
CBC has included some fabulous information, including rules of the game,
glossary of terms, player and coach interviews, profiles, etc. Unfortunately CBC
will only be carrying one of the water polo games, the men's Canada vs Hungary
game. Set your video recorder for 12 midnight-3am (Ottawa time) on August
17, as the game will be televised during that time period.

Canadian teams at the Junior Pan-Am Games, held recently in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Team Ontario Men Win Olympic Hopes Tournament in Szentes,
Hungary
Submitted by
Carolyn McGill and Connor Lee
After prepping in Toronto, Eger and Budapest, the Team Ontario men competed at
the Olympic Hopes tournament in Szentes, Hungary, August 1-3.
They defeated teams from Russia, Israel, Szentes, and California to win the
tournament.
The Titans on Team
Ontario 2008 were: Coach Nick Forster (assisting Kirby Park) and athletes: Logan
Seaman, Connor Lee, Lyle Brooks, Ben Bouwer and Ogi Gutovic.
Connor writes:
We enjoyed the spa and buffet in
Eger immensely. Besides the occasional loaf of moldy bread, the food was
excellent throughout the entire trip. It was great meeting the British guys.
They were extremely enthusiastic and high spirited. We got to meet the national
youth women's teams of Hungary and Australia in Eger.
It was unfortunate that there was a bug going around the entire team, but
we managed to pull together and win all our 4 games of the tournament. We played
against Russia, Israel, California and the local Szentes team. For every game we
struggled at the beginning but always ended playing as the better team. Russia
played dirty and at times was violent but we managed to play a clean game and
focus on strategy.
Sight-seeing in Budapest we observed the diverse architecture and wandered
through the busy marketplaces. The boat tour gave us the night-time perspective
of both Buda and Pest from the Danube river (with the British team cheering the
entire way). It was a lot of fun to participate in activities such as basketball
and water-sliding with people from all different countries around the pool where
the tournament was held.
Lots of thanks to the chaperones for keeping us fed and hydrated and to the
coaches for continually pushing us to play at our best and to bond and grow as a
team.
Team Ontario Women Win Silver in Olympic Hopefuls Tournament in Prague, Czech
Republic
Submitted by
Annie Chinneck
The 2008 Women's Team Ontario roster
was filled with familiar names, as 8 of the 14 participants were from Ottawa:
Danielle Hirsh, Emily Hodgson, Steph Lessard, Steph Le Saux Farmer, Gillian
Massel, Lisa Sharp, Rachel Stein, and captain Annie Chinneck. Along with
team-mates from KW, Scarborough, and Hamilton and coaches Christi Bardecki and
Megan Whittle, the girls started their training at a cottage just halfway
between Ottawa and Toronto, completing 4km lake swims and obstacle courses. They
then continued their training abroad, working alongside the national teams of
both Slovakia and the Czech Republic. All their hard work paid off when they
swept a co-ed tournament in the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, and their two
even teams placed first and second. After a brief stay in Pilsen, the home of
Pilsner beer, they then moved on to Prague, where they placed second in the
Olympics Hopefuls Tournament. To secure this spot, they beat the Hungarian B
team 9-5, the Slovakian team 7-4, and the Czech team 13-8 but lost to the
Hungarian A team by only two points (5-7). The girls also had a lot of fun
touring castles, hitting up discos and black light shows, and being oogled by
overalled Czeskis.
