Titans Cup (14U), January 31-February 1, 2009

As you know, we are hosting the annual Titans Cup tournament at Nepean Sportsplex on January 31- February 1. Parents of Academy and ILWP players- if your child is participating we expect that you can help out as a Minor Official.  There are a number of volunteer Minor Official roles that we need filled, including Game Secretary (track the game statistics on a laptop computer) and Game Clock operator, as well as set-up and take-down crews. We can ONLY make this event a success with your help.

Older athletes and students are more than welcome to volunteer for these shifts, and we would be happy to sign off your volunteer hours for high school.

To sign up to volunteer, please click on this link and follow the instructions (volunteer shifts are 2 games at a time): http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pScAI6auULRZRXN5lb3P5LA  (if you are wondering which team your child is on, rosters will be sent out through team managers. They are 'roughly' based on the participants at each of the practice pools, with a few changes to balance out the teams).

Minor Officials are expected to wear a white t-shirt (with or without collar; logos are okay). Please report to the Hospitality Room 15 minutes before your shift (the classroom just off the pool deck, near the dive towers).

Minor Officials Training (for volunteers intending to help with Titans Cup 14U or the Titans Invitational 16/18U)- choice of two sessions, both Sundays. We don't want this to be stressful!  If you've never done it before, or have done it and would like a refresher, please join us at one of the two sessions:  January 18 or 25, 6:30pm at Nepean Sportsplex.  Please register by contacting Deanna at INFO@titanswaterpolo.ca

As well, we will be asking for donations for the Hospitality Room (for volunteers, officials and coaches). More information to follow on this.

If you have questions, please direct them to Tournament Director Colin Kelly at Colin.Kelly@alcatel-lucent.com

22U National Club Championships

The Ottawa Titans are hosting the 22U National Club Championships on March 20-22 at Carleton University Pool. The Titans will be entering two women's and one men's team (our older players, with the addition of some Titans alumni). The Host Committee is mostly in place and planning is underway.

We require two key roles still to be filled. Can you help? The roles are Fundraising/ Sponsorship Chair and Tournament Program (booklet) Chair. If you are interested in either of these, or have other skills to offer to the organizing committee, please contact Tournament Co-Chair Carolyn McGill at carolynmcgill@sympatico.ca

$50 REWARD Offered For Recruitment of New Players!

In an effort to step up our recruitment of new players, the Titans are offering a REWARD ($50 cheque) payable to any player or parent who is able to bring a brand new player on board. While our aim is primarily to broaden our base by increasing the number of players in 'I Love Water Polo' and Recreational House League, we will also honour a reward for new recruits to our competitive programs (by invitation of the head coaches in this case). Potential new players are welcome to come out and try a practice before committing. In order to cash in on your $50 reward, the new player must sign up and pay for the remainder of the season (late registrants are entitled to a pro-rated fee).  Contact General Manager Deanna Barry at INFO@titanswaterpolo.ca. OFFER EXPIRES FEBRUARY 13, 2009.

Ottawa Water Polo League (OWPL)
Submitted by Christine Taschereau

The Ottawa Titans' U18 water polo team, the Great White Sharks (GWS), had a great opportunity this season to participate in Ottawa Water Polo League. During this short season that started September 24 the GWS had a chance to play 11 action-packed games against teams that were, for the most part, older, physically larger, more experienced and composed of some former national team players. The GWS throughout the seasons showed a high level of competiveness and focus during some very heated games. That focus paid off as the GWS made their way to the Gold medal game.

The season wrapped up last Monday night with the GWS pitted against the Carleton University Ravens. The Ravens team is made up of many Titan alumni and had recently finished second in the 2008 Ontario University Athletics Water Polo Championships.

A loud supportive crowd was present in the stands to cheer the GWS on. In addition to the many parents and family of GWS players a number of the Titans Academy players came to show their support for the GWS. The team, under Captain John Conway, did not disappoint fans. John started the scoring off quickly and followed swiftly with a second goal when GWS British Columbia import, Luke, was interfered with and the GWS were awarded a 5 m shot. The 1st quarter ended 4 to 2 for the GWS with James and lefty Rodrigo also scored for the GWS.

Captain John scored again at the beginning of the 2nd quarter when the Ravens were penalized with a second 5m shot. The GWS advance must have woken up former Titan, Stephan Pavicevic, as he scored 4 times in the 2nd quarter. John and the rest of the GWS were trying very hard to even out the score. Some GWS had spent the week-end in a National Team development training session and were bushed but still checking tight and fighting the Ravens for every inch of the pool. At the end of the 2nd quarter the GWS were just one point behind the Ravens. The game was still within reach.

Coach Jerry tried to refocus the players between quarters and it appeared to work as Ogi tied the game in the 3rd quarter. The team then tried to create other scoring situations but were overpowered by the Ravens who scored twice during the quarter.

The 4th quarter started with the Ravens 2 points ahead of the Titans. GWS Lyle Brooks decided it was time for action and scored early in the quarter. The Ravens countered with 2 quick goals. Lyle, cool and confident fought his way through the Ravens' defence and scored twice. The crowd was cheering the GWS on when the final whistle ended the game for the GWS with a heartbreaking 12-11 loss.

Thank you, Andras Szeri for running the Ottawa Water Polo League and offering us such exciting games. Thank you, Jerry for coaching, guiding and inspiring the GWS through the season. Congratulations to John Conway for being named MVP with 36 goals to his name.
