Titans Cup January 26-27, 2008
Submitted by Sue Sidebottom, Tournament Director

Minor officials are still needed for Titans Cup this weekend.  For the tournaments our clubs host, parent volunteers are expected to fill these positions.  High school water polo athletes are also most welcome to volunteer and earn their high school volunteer hours.  No previous experience is needed, simply come for the game prior to your scheduled time slot to observe and ask the previous volunteer to show you what to do.  We will have lots of help on deck for you!

To volunteer, check the Titans Cup volunteer schedule on the club website (or click here:
Volunteer Schedule).  Then contact Boris Hristov at borishristov@rogers.com or (613) 271-0273.  There are 2 minor official positions: game secretary and game clock.  Let Boris know what position you are volunteering for and which games you will do.

We are happy to have CTPhoto coming again to do professional photos of our teams and athletes.  Parents can submit a request form at the photographer's table if they would like the photographer to try and get an individual action photo of their athlete.  You need to specify your athlete's cap number and team name on the request form, then check back later in the tournament to view photos taken from your athlete's games to purchase them.

Athlete Fundraising/ Sponsorship Commitment

We hope all families have given some consideration to their athlete's fundraising/ sponsorship commitment. Many families have already 'bought out' the program by writing a $250 cheque to Titans Water Polo and mailing it in- this is perfectly acceptable. The chocolate bar fundraiser is one option that has been offered. Some families are working on a bottle drive, selling programs at an Ottawa 67s game or running a LOEB BBQ. Another option is to purchase Loblaws gift cards. The return is 5%, and you can purchase the cards in multiples of $100. We will allow you to write post-dated cheques through to August for these. A $5000 commitment would complete the fundraising commitment, or you can do any amount you choose. We'll credit 5% of what you purchase to your fundraising commitment. Please contact General Manager Deanna Barry, INFO@titanswaterpolo.ca

Deadline for Orders for Chocolate Bar Fundraiser is January 24

A reminder that for those families interested in working towards their fundraising commitment through the chocolate bar campaign, orders are due by end of day, Thursday, January 24. For further information, please contact Christine at alecki@magma.ca

Canadian Select League Jan. 17-20, 2008
Submitted by Sharon Lapins

I just had the pleasure of watching another amazing few days of CSL (Canadian Select League) action in Montreal, this time at the CAMO pool.  The Titans can be so proud of our athletes, Evie Marshall, Rebekka Steenkamer and Maria Lapins, who worked hard, learned a lot, and did a wonderful job representing the high standards of our club.  All of these athletes bring excellence to the pool, in and out of the water.  Congratulations to all of you!

Our club can also be very proud of our own Rob Tarnoczy who coached his team, the West Coast Wild Cats, to a 6-0 record at CSL this past weekend, the first team to go undefeated over a weekend in CSL history!  They are the top team going into the playoffs in the spring.

Hull Cadet Invitational
Submitted by Christine Taschereau

I don't know who was happier to see the tournament start: the players – who finally got to play together as a team; the coach – who finally got to see what the 2008 Tiger Sharks could do; or the parents – who just love seeing their sons play water polo.

By fluke the tournament was changed, at the last minute from a 2-division, 5 game, cross-over, play-off tourney into a 7 game, marathon round-robin tournament. The players certainly got their money worth.

The tournament started as most of the local ones do, with Ottawa playing Hull but the Hull club divided its Cadet players between 2 teams that had bantam players making up the remainder of both teams. The Tiger Sharks really didn't know what to expect. Lyle started the offensive attack with a back-hand shot that missed the net. David L followed shortly thereafter with the first goal of the game. The Tiger Sharks dominated the play early on and let Hull 2 score only once towards the end of the second quarter. Patrick proved his speed by winning 3 of the 4 swim-offs. Alec got the fourth one in the 19-1 Tiger Sharks' victory.

It was an early and tough start on Saturday against CAMO, the closest rival performance wise to the Tiger Sharks. CAMO started off the scoring with a quick first goal but David T evened things up by the end of the first quarter. Ogi pulled Ottawa ahead in the second but CAMO was able to even the score. CAMO was not about to quit and continued to challenge until the end of the 3rd quarter. The game ended 9-4 in the Tiger Sharks' favour.

After lunch the Tiger Sharks faced the mixed Bantam-Cadet team from Laval although the Tiger Sharks dominated the game Laval did score twice in this 16-2 win.

The final game of the day was about as tough a the first game on Saturday with the Tiger Sharks, one player absent and one injured, against Scarborough. On top of that both teams were suffering very badly from red, sore eyes. due to the chlorine level in the pool. The 14-4 score does not do justice to the effort made by Scarborough during this game. This is a very strong team with strong girls, 2 of the 4 goals were score by Scarborough's female players. By this time it was very clear that the Tiger Sharks would be facing CAMO or Scarborough in the gold medal game.

On Sunday the team had an even earlier start against the CAEM team that was not only a mixed Bantam-Cadet team, it also had some Atom age players on their roster. The advantage was very obviously in the Tiger Sharks' favour so Coach Pierre used the opportunity to practice certain plays in a game situation. The team worked together to give goalies Charles and Ben a shut-out in the 14-0 win.

Just after CAMO ensured its 2nd place finish with a win over Scarborough, and a 2-hour rest, the Tiger Sharks faced the other Hull team. Lyle started the scoring off but Hull tied the game very quickly. Ben, the goalie, scored in the second quarter and then the rest of the team helped insure the win with 6 other players scoring in the 10-2 win.

The gold medal game against CAMO started late but this gave mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers time to get there and support their favourite player. Once the whistle blew James took off and won the swim off. David T started off the scoring but the game was tied at 1 by the end of the first quarter. Five different Tiger Sharks scored before CAMO scored its second goal in the second quarter. Seven more Tiger Sharks goals in the third quarter with CAMO scoring only once more with this final 13-3 victory the Tiger Sharks won the tournament's gold medal. A first Cadet Gold for most of the players.
