Awards Banquet June 5th
Submitted by Sue Sidebottom

Many thanks go to banquet organizers Judy Thomas and Bev Davis and all the volunteers who contributed to make this year's banquet another success!  Thanks also go out to the executive and general manager Deanna Barry who are the superglue that keeps our club so well-organized.  Thanks to Biljana Pavicevic who put together a terrific slideshow. Our club's many excellent and hardworking athletes, coaches, volunteers and award winners were honoured at the banquet.  Photos from the banquet, courtesy of Paul Walker, should be available next week.

John Chinneck has been busy updating our club website with awards and news announced at the banquet and more.  He has posted David Hart's full banquet announcement that "Titans Water Polo is the #1 Club in Canada" as news on the club website home page (see
More... ).  John notes that the "Articles and Media" top level menu item on the club website has now been replaced by "Honours".  This includes the Titans Hall of Fame, a new virtual wall of photos of the many Tournament Banners our club has been awarded over the years, a list of Awards 2007-2008 which were presented at this year's banquet, and a complete list of Awards Through the Years . (The link to the DVDs that was previously under the "Articles and Media" menu item has been moved into "Athlete Resources".)

Congratulations to all our award winners!

Call for Summer Event Submissions!

Each summer our athletes are involved in many different activities and trips which we would love to see photos from and hear about!  Last year I put together a special "Athletes' Summer 2007 Events" Newsletter (check it out by clicking here: Summer 2007), and I would be pleased to put one together again this fall.  You can send in submissions to news@titanswaterpolo.ca anytime over the summer, and I will save them to be published in the "Athletes' Summer 2008 Events" Newsletter.

Hull Tournament June 6-8, 2008

Our Academy teams always look forward to the end-of-year fun tournament in Hull.  We had
one ILWP team entered in the Atom tournament and three teams entered in the Bantam tournament: the Sharks, Dolphins and Barracudas.

ILWP Team

Andrea Kennedy organized and coached a composite ILWP team who entered in the Atom tournament.  One of the athlete's parents, Paul Fritz-Nemeth, reported that although the team took awhile to get to know each other and adjust to the competitive rules (versus the ILWP rules), the kids had a great time and really enjoyed the experience.  We look forward to welcoming some of these athletes to the competitive program next year!

Sharks Win Silver
Submitted by Blake Christie

The tournament started off for the Sharks with a clash against the Dolphins, unfortunately I wasn't there but Andrea Kennedy (Thank you Andrea) took over the reins and guided them to victory (yay boys).  Our second game of the weekend fell on early Saturday morning (ugh) against DDO (double ugh). After going up 5-3 at half, our offense had difficulty adjusting to DDO's new defense and we were left goalless for the final half while relinquishing 4 goals, we lost 7-5.   With the addition of superstar Owen Kennedy we played CDN (who had beaten that same DDO team 8-6).  Our guys came out flying and never looked back with another perennial superstar David Lapin unable to miss the net. We took the game easily 14-7.  Going into our last game of the round robin, we found ourselves against the top team from Quebec, CAEM, they did not disappoint, at one point taking a 9-1 lead against us, we were in awe of their 1-5 drop (Sarcasm I hope is seeping through at this moment as I don't understand how we couldn't get the ball to the weak side and I digress) the final score was 13 or 14-6.  Luckily due to our plentiful goals against CDN we were able to win the 3-way tie breaker and move onto the medal round.

Ah Sunday the hope of a new day, my blood pressure was almost back to normal after taking a 4-1 lead in the first quarter against CAEM 'B' (who were the winners of the other division) and yes folks I know what you're thinking they are an actual B team compared to the A team.  With a couple of poorly planned passes, mistake upon mistake my blood pressure was sky rocketing again and the spasm that I get in the back of my head from time to time was back, we found ourselves in a two goal deficit in the fourth quarter,  but the good side (us) finally got their act together and came back to win the game in dramatic style, also I would've probably lost it if a club other than the Titans had an A-Team vs. a B-Team in the finals.

The Finals, sweet a chance at redemption................. You know what?  These are the games that I walk away from and I can honestly say that every player (from our side) that was a part of it became a better player.  The score wasn't reflective of the improvement we had made.  We had a lot more quality chances and limited the other team to a lot fewer quality chances than in the previous game.  So good on the Sharks, I hope that you have a great summer, because we should all be proud of the performance we put put into that gold medal game.  We lost 10-4 but it was one of the few losses I can walk away happy from.

Thanks to our team manager Sarah Morgan and also to Sue Sidebottom for helping me out on Friday night.

Dolphins

The Dolphins had fun participating in the end-of-year Bantam Hull tournament this past weekend.  A couple members of the current Dolphins weren't able to make this tournament, so we were pleased to have a couple of Dolphin alumni join the team - Jelena and Ceilidh!  We had some pretty stiff competition in our division playing mostly all-boys teams from CAEM, CDN (Cote de Neige), DDO and our very own Sharks!  None the less, our girls were always up to the challenge.

Saturday, we had a close game with DDO, that we initially went up 2-0, but weren't able to maintain our lead, so we weren't unfortunately able to pull that one out of the bag.  The Dolphins stayed after that game to cheer on the Sharks, then we went across the street to Resto R Pizza to enjoy a team pizza supper (and their air conditioning :) .  We headed back to the pool area and had some time outside for team karaoke and cartwheel challenges (Mackenzie's dad does fabulous cartwheels!)  After already having played two games that day, we had our last game on Saturday starting at 9:30pm.  For this late-night game, Jen had to institute a "no sitting" rule for the last quarter of the previous game, as some of the girls had eyelids that looked fairly heavy at that point in the day ...  A fun and full day all-in-all!

We ended the tournament with one playoff game on Sunday which we won.  Congratulations to the girls for always smiling and never giving up despite playing some very talented teams!  Thanks also to coach Jen for being our lead Dolphin this year!  It was fun having one more tournament to cap the season.

Barracudas
Submitted by Blake Christie

I feel very positive after the weekend spent coaching the Barracudas.  The results don't show how far these players have come this year.  It's important to note that with this age group we have a broad spectrum of ability levels derived from experience, size and age.  So with that in mind we can look at tournaments from the perspective of emphasizing key individual tasks that will help the team in the long run rather than the short term.  First we look at the basics or the ABCs of water polo A- Legs, B- Swimming and C - Passing/shooting of the individuals on the team.  These basics are the base that every other skill stems from and are needed to improve in such a demanding game.  This past weekend we had a chance to see the strongest teams from Quebec and Eastern Canada.  I have to say that I was very proud of the composure that the Barracudas displayed in the face of such an imposing oppositions game after game.

The goals and objectives that were set out were:

Defense - Check tight, keep physical contact with the opposing player, keep our hips up so that we can be more mobile in the water and watch the ball and play develop.

Offense - Setup our offense deep into the opposing team zone.  Control the ball by swimming back and calling for the ball or driving when it was our turn (making it an easier pass for our teammates), laying out using hard legs, making good passes to the player that was expected to receive the ball.

Over the course of the tournament I saw an improvement in all these goals and I even started to see us countering the other teams by being aware of what was going on as plays developed.  We had a lot of quality opportunities and reduced our mistakes.  I think the Barracudas even drew more kick outs than the Sharks (Wow).

As I walk away from this season I'm excited about the potential I see in all the players involved and they in turn should be proud of the effort they put in, I look forward to seeing them all next season and I hope you all have a great summer.  Thank you very much to Val for being our team manager without volunteers like Val, Sue and Sarah we would not to be able to put together such a quality program (trust me I know).
