Water / Air Quality Issues at University of Ottawa Pool
Submitted by Deanna Barry

We have been in contact with the pool administration at University of Ottawa Pool, following numerous complaints from Titans families regarding sore/ itchy/ red eyes and coughing following use of the University of Ottawa pool (more so than in other pools). It is not the chemical balance in the pool, but the air circulation/ ventilation system that is causing the problem. The good news (but not immediate) is that the pool will be closed for six weeks this summer for major maintenance, to include the installation of a new ventilation system. In the meantime, they will be carefully monitoring the free chlorine levels and keeping them at the very minimum level allowed (still within Ontario Pool Regulation rates). However when they do this, other chemicals then become unbalanced and they need to 'shock' the pool more frequently to get the chemical balance back to normal. This can result in a spike in free chlorine levels, in some cases to a point where they have to close the pool for 24 hours or more. As much as possible they will be doing this procedure on Sunday nights, giving enough time to balance both air and water quality by the time our athletes are in on Monday evenings, and having the least impact on pool users. The pool staff have been working hard to maintain a balance, however the reality is that things won't be completely in synch until September 2008. They have assured us that the health of pool users is of high priority. Note that all Class A pools (City, University, etc) in Ontario are governed by Ontario Pool Regulations and public health regulations, which include minimum/ maximum levels of chemicals in order to be able to remain in operation, so while we are feeling the effects of changes in air/ water quality, they do remain within these strict regulations (or they would have to close temporarily). Thank you for your patience, as well as to parents who have e-mailed complaints. We can only follow up on them if we know about them!

Interesting Interview for Cadet / Youth Athletes
Submitted by David Hart

Here is a link to an interview with Nathaniel Miller from DDO (member of men's team going to Beijing).
I feel it would be of interest to our cadet-youth athletes as it deals with some very relevant topics.

Canadian dream team makes water polo waves

Below is an article you may be interested in from the Ottawa Citizen newspaper:

Martin Cleary, The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Saturday, March 22, 2008

In 1995, David Hart of Ottawa created the Dream Team project for the Canadian men's water polo program.
The purpose was simple, but long term -- find young talent, develop the players for many years and qualify for the Olympics on their own merits.
The dream finally came true on March 7, when Canada upset the host Romanians, 9-8, to grab one of the final four spots in men's water polo for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.
