18U Men's Nationals, May 8-11, Montreal

Manta Rays to the Nationals!
Submitted by Deanna Barry

The Manta Rays entered as a second Titans team in the 18U National Championships to gain further game experience and take advantage of a tournament close to home. While scores weren't high, coach Nick Forster commended each of the players for their effort and good sportsmanship over the weekend. All players had lots of game time and were able to improve their skills.

We departed Ottawa at 6:30am on Thursday (drivers were bright and bushy-tailed--the boys were definitely NOT!). First game was at 10am versus our own Great White Sharks. While the outcome was obvious from the beginning, playing a 'familiar' team was a good way to start the tournament. Fred Proulx and David Tushingham were the scorers for this game. Congratulations to Owen Kennedy for being named a Star in the game. Following this game, we headed to the famous Schwartz's for smoked meat sandwiches, where we experienced the rudeness (well known and expected) of the servers, but well worth it. Some pickup football in Parc Mont-Royal in the afternoon, a relaxing dinner, and a movie rounded out the day.

On Friday morning, after an early breakfast in the chaperone's rooms, we played against Fraser Valley 2. We had a good game, but were unable to keep up with the opponents. Two early goals by David Tushingham (one on a power play) were highlights. David scored a third goal later in the game. Three more goals scored by Evan Bradshaw (one on man-down) and one by Louis Brosseau.  David Tushingham was awarded a Star in this game for his efforts- way to go! A water gun fight outside, shopping and a buffet dinner, followed by a team meeting took care of the rest of this day.

On Saturday morning we came up against Pacific Storm. We got off to a great start, taking the first three shots on goal of the game, and with Evan scoring early on. At the end of the first quarter, Storm was leading 4:1. There were no goals in the second quarter, and we were holding our own. David Tushingham scored in the 3rd quarter, with only 35 seconds left on a 5m shot. Louis scored with 22 seconds left in the 4th quarter. We just didn't have the steam to keep up with Storm, but this was our best game yet in terms of teamwork and performance, as well as shots on goal.

On Sunday, our final game was played against Laval, with three points from Evan, 1 from Louis and 1 from David. Evan's final goal, fired from half-pool, was not counted originally, but he motioned that it had gone in. When the referee checked, he found that the ball had made a hole in the net and gone right through. One more point for the Manta Rays! Not enough to win us the game, but a good shot!

It was a pleasure to spend four days with this group of boys. Many thanks to the chaperones and drivers, as well as Team Manager Lorraine Proulx for organizing things and making it happen, as well as the the parent cheering section, who were awesome!

Great White Sharks Capture Gold at 18U Men's National Championships in Montreal
Submitted by Heather Seaman, Team Manager

Congratulation goes out to the coaching staff: Jerry, Nick and Pierre and the players:  Charles, Calum, Logan, Conner, John, Ben, Lyle, Ogi and David for an outstanding performance in Montreal this past weekend.  This team of nine young men displayed amazing stamina, determination and team play to pull it all together culminating in a spectacular Gold Medal performance on Sunday afternoon against CAMO (13- 6).

Unfortunately the boys did not choose the road of least resistance.  In their second game of the tournament the Titans had a very disappointing loss (8-6) to the York Mavericks.  This put the team into the loser bracket of the double elimination format of the tournament.  There was no room to falter.  Each and every subsequent game the team just kept on building on their success and got stronger and more determined to win.   Friday the boys faced Pacific Storm (11-5) in the morning and Scarborough Shadow (12 –5) in the afternoon.  Saturday saw the Titans up against a very fit and full roster from Fraser Valley who had thought they would swim the boys into the ground.  The Titans did not waver and beat the boys from BC (8-2).  The closest match came against Hull on Saturday afternoon.  The boys stayed true to the game plan and won (11-8).  On Sunday morning the boys were pumped were determined for sweet revenge against their nemesis York.  There was no looking back as they spanked York (12- 4).  The rest is history.

Eight games in 4 days was a grueling schedule for 9 players.  Jerry summed it up as:

"Hard work, desire to win and mind set of not wanting to let down teammates no matter how tired or in how much pain is at the root of our success."

Not only did the Titans capture gold but Charles Bower and Calum Norton Kendrick were named to the all-star team and all three top individual awards were snapped up by Titans: MVP Charles Bower; MVG Ben Bower and MVC Jerry Tesanovic.

Thank you to all of the parents who were able to come out to the games and cheer on the boys.   A special thanks to Jerry for his commitment to the team, his brilliant coaching and believing in the boys.

It has been a pleasure and an honour to be associated with the Great White Sharks. Go Titans!
