Schedule For Volunteer Rec House League and ILWP/ Academy Referees is Now Posted
As part of your registration agreement, all competitive athletes
in the 18+U and 16+U programs must volunteer some of their time to the
club. As a first opportunity to meet this commitment, athletes
were approached to volunteer as referees for some of our House League
sessions.
The list of volunteers for each House League session is available on the
Titans website under "Athletes Resources" or you can click on
Schedule
to see it. Please look at the schedule now, and mark your
personal calendar if your name is on the schedule.
Every athlete is expected to show up on time. If, for valid reasons, an
athlete cannot referee at their assigned session, it is this athlete's
responsibility to switch their session with someone else and to notify the
House League coordinator of the substitution. Don't forget your
whistle!
Presently all referee volunteer slots are full, but more referee volunteers
may be needed as the season progresses. Any high school volunteers can
earn their volunteer hours required for school. To be put on the referee
volunteer waiting list (email and phone number required), or for any
information on scheduling for these sessions, please contact House League
Coordinator Pierre Tremblay, at
tremblay.pierre@rogers.com
.
Note that there will be a referee basic training session offered shortly. For those interested in furthering their referee credentials, a formal level 1 referee training course will also be offered later on this year. Stay tuned for details.
I believe the definition of the word "team" was expanded this week-end to include the term GREAT WHITE SHARKS (GWS). In their first tournament of the season the 2008‑09 version of the GWS proved that they were a team with each member contributing to the overall outcome.
In the first game against the U of O once Anthony got possession of the ball on the swim-off, Luke Spooner, one of our newest Titans, quickly scored setting the tone for this 14-4 victory in which 7 other GWS scored.
In game II, against Queens, 4 different GWS won each of the 4 swim-offs. John, Connor and Lyle also appeared to be in a scoring competition with 6, 5 and 4 goals respectively. This 23-3 romp insured that the GWS would be playing, at a minimum, for the bronze medal on Sunday.
The GWS faced their first real challenge on Saturday night against the Carleton Ravens. Although the GWS appeared quicker, winning most of the swim-offs, and goalies, Ben and Charles, blocked some formidable shots, the size and physical strength of the Ravens overcame the GWS. The team didn't give up easily though. Luke, in the 3rd quarter, must have had 3 shots in a row before losing possession of the ball. And L‑P scored in the last seconds of the game. The Ravens defeated the GWS 16 to 8.
After a well deserved rest the GWS faced the Water Walkers on Sunday morning. Note that the Olympian, Sasa Palmarevic, is on this team as are, at least, 3 other former national team members. This was a very rough game with the Water Walkers trying to use their size as opposed to their ability to overcome the speed and agility of the younger GWS. At the end of the 1st quarter the GWS were leading 3 to 2. The Water Walkers pulled ahead in the 2 quarter but the GWS were still within striking distance. A brutality ejection in the 3rd quarter against the Water Walkers had everyone quite confused. John was able to score on the resulting 5 metre shot but in the end the GWS lost to the Water Walkers 15-9.
In the Bronze medal game Sunday afternoon, with the sun pouring into the pool area, the GWS were ready to win. Alec won the first swim-off and Rodrigo, the other new Titan, started the scoring off with John and Lyle ensuring that the team was well ahead by the end of the 1st quarter. 7 GWS scored during this 20-8 victory.
Special thanks to Connor Lee and Louis-Philippe Brosseau, that were able to join the GWS for this tournament and will also be part of the team for the OWPL games and to Jerry for providing this tournament opportunity to the team.

Titans U+18 AAA Women's Teams Win Silver at First Tournament of the Season
Submitted by Penny Stein
After two weeks of dryland training and only two sessions in the pool, the
Titans 18+U AAA Women's teams, Piranhas and Swordfish, competed in their
first tournament of the season, the Carleton University Ravens
Invitational. Having to share an entry spot and playing two games
apiece in the round robin, Piranhas vs UOttawa Gee Gees and Ravens, and
Swordfish vs Queens and RORCA, the Titans Women ended the round robin in
2nd place with only one loss against RORCA.
The Piranhas and Swordfish combined as a team for the gold medal playoff
game and played an exciting and challenging game against RORCA, losing by
only one goal and taking the silver. Titans Women's Head Coach,
Celso Rojas was very pleased with the strong performance and behaviour of
his athletes and the strength that they demonstrated working together as
two new teams.
